Game of Thrones is an original HBO series based on George R.R Martin’s best selling fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. Since the pilot series in 2009, the show has filmed across various locations in County Antrim and many of them in the scenic and picturesque Causeway Coast and Glens. For cast members, Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and Conleth Hill (Lord Varys) , it was something of a homecoming as both of the cast are from the area, Coleraine and the seaside town of Ballycastle respectively. Lough Neagh: The Summer Sea – Bordering five of Northern Ireland’s six counties, Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles. The shores of Lough Neagh were used in Season 5 Episode 5, when Tyrion and Jorah take cover after they are attacked by Stone Men, subsequently infecting Jorah with Greyscale.
Shillanavogy Valley: Dothraki Sea – Lying beneath Slemish Mountain, the valley was used as the vast area of grasslands in Essos. Here Daenerys, her brother Viserys and the Dothraki Khalasar make camp in the long grassed plains that the Dothraki call home in Season 1 Episode 2. Game of Thrones Territory.
Sallagh Braes: The Riverlands – This is a striking location within the Glens of Antrim defined by cliffs and beautiful moorland. Here the Hound helped build a sentry with Brother Ray before discovering the devastating slaughter of the villagers in Season 6 Episode 7. Game of thrones.
Cairncastle: The Neck & North of Winterfell 1 – The windswept plateau located above a Bronze Age Fort and settlement provided the wild landscape where Ned Stark beheaded the Night’s Watch deserter in Season 1 Episode 1. A nearby location also featured in Season 5 Episode 3, as the place where Littlefinger told Sansa Stark they were returning to a now Bolton occupied Winterfell together. Game of Thrones Territory.
Carnlough Harbour: Braavos Canal – This is a picturesque rugged harbour situated in the small coastal village of Carnlough. Used in Season 6 Episode 7 when Arya surfaced from the water after being attacked by the Waif, and crawled up the harbour steps on to the streets of Braavos. Game of thrones.
Galboly: The Glens of Antrim / Runestone – Situated above Garron Point on a plateau beneath towering Basalt cliffs is where Sansa and Littlefinger watch Robin practice his swordsmanship in Season 5 Episode 4. Littlefinger and Robin agree to march to Sansa’s aid with the Knights of the Vale.
Cushendun Caves: A Cove in the Stormlands – In the quaint village of Cushendun, at the mouth of the river Dun, you will find the magnificent caves that were formed over 400 million year ago. They are easily accessible along the coast from the village. They were used in Season 2 Episode 4 when Melisandre gave birth to the shadow creature, which goes on to kill Renly Baratheon. Murlough Bay: Slavers bay & Renly’s Camp – Along one of Europe’s most beautiful driving roads are the wild and windswept cliffs above Murlough Bay. It is here in Ireland’s furthest North East that brothers Stannis and Renly met in Season 2 Episode 4. On the landscape bay, Tyrion and Jorah were captured by slavers in Season 5 Episode 6.
Fair Head: Dragonstone Cliffs – This rocky headland rises 600ft above sea level and lies just three miles from the town of Ballycastle. Impressive Fair Head commands spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean. In Season 7 Episode 3, Varys confronts Melisandre here about her avoidance of Jon Snow before advising her to leave Westeros forever. It’s also where Jon, Daenerys and Drogon, share a moment together in Episode 5, and latterly Tyrion and Daenerys in Episode 6.
Larrybane: The Stormlands & Nagga’s Hill, Old Wyk – This dramatic headland, sheltered by Sheep Island, is beside the exhilarating Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. Used in Season 2 Episode 3 as Renly Baratheon’s camp and where Brienne was named to Renly’s Kingsguard. In Season 6 Episode 5 it was the setting for the Kinsmoot.
Ballintoy: Lordsport Harbour & Pyke – This coastal nook / harbour at the end of a dramatic twisting road is synonymous with Pyke and the Iron Islands. Theon returns here in Season 2 Episode 2 and is baptised here in Season 2 Episode 3. Season 6 Episode 5 also features Euron’s drowning and rebirth, and the nearby beach played host to Melisandre’s burning of Stannis Baratheon’s bannerman. Game of Thrones Territory.
The Dark Hedges: The Kingsroad – The intriguing interwinding beautiful avenue of Beech trees was planted by the Stewart family in the 18th century to impress visitors as they approached Gracehill House. The Dark Hedges were used in Season 2 Episode 1 The North Remembers – Following the death of her father, Ned Stark, Arya escapes King’s Landing disguised as a boy. Travelling on the Kingsroad in the back of a cart along with Gentry and Hot Pie, all new recruits for the Night’s Watch, Area starts her long and arduous journey north.
